No fewer than thirteen people perish and 98 injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.
A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term finished the previous year. This project was closely associated with his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in public works. They were built at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised persistent apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a full safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and management of these vital initiatives.
